DAVID-ANDERSEN Sterling Enamel 2 3/8 BUTTERFLY Pin EUC BIG Vintge Norway Brooch. In an incredibly luminous shade of rich, creamy white enamel, contrasting with deep black, this BIG sterling vermeil Butterfly is by "the Norwegian Georg Jensen" as Christie Romero called the well respected Norwegian silver maker David-Andersen in. SO striking and in Excellent vintage condition, the Butterfly is covered with patterns of waves, dots, circles and lines under the enamel that are very effective, providing the impression of texture and depth while vividly conveying the ethereal beauty of a butterfly. SO well made, with expert enameling and great detail, it is not just eyecatching; it is absolutely mesmerizing.
The shapely wings arch slightly from the concave center, which appears to accentuate the sheen and electric luminosity of that lustrous white in the play of light. It is a Large Specimen, measuring in at about 2-3/8" wide by just under 1-1/2" (1-7/16) tall. The butterfly is signed on the back on one side, "D-A" followed by the pair of scales that has been the company's logo since 1939 above "Norway" and on the other, "925 S" above "Sterling". It is in Excellent vintage condition with nothing more than expected surface dirt, scratches and tarnish.
There are the usual slight manufacturing imperfections, including bubbles. David-Andersen is known for their butterflies as well as for some of the best Scandinavian mid century modern design. This Big Butterfly pin is wearable and quite dramatic, in addition to being collectible, managing to be at the same time both tailored and feminine as well as casual and dressy. With its versatile color scheme, dynamite in black and white, it will go with everything year round, night or day, to work or play. In such nice condition, it would also make a terrific gift, although I doubt you will want to part with it, and will flutter out of here in a gift box, just in case.
