Georg JENSEN Pin G I Denmark 830 Silver Amethyst 1915 - 1930 EARLY Brooch # 107. Scandinavian Arts and Crafts at its Best! This Early vintage Georg Jensen brooch features a lovely Skonvirke or Danish Arts and Crafts / Art Nouveau floral design, enhanced with a beautiful amethyst cabochon. This design was made both with and without a stone and this version, with the cab, is unquestionably superior.
The signature dates it to between 1914 and 1930, so it was made in the first 25 years of the company's existence, around a century ago. Dimensional and well-proportioned, with flowing lines and sensual curves, it is highly detailed and so sculptural, it almost looks as if it were carved.
It is amazing how skillfully the artist captured in silver the ethereal quality and contours of the gossamer blossom with its sensually curving ruffled petals. The surfaces of the petals near the edges appear ever so lightly hand hammered which, along with incised and oxidized lines, gives them a lifelike texture and depth, while creating nuanced shadowing. The smooth bezel-set amethyst cab at the center provides a focal point, adding color and interest. The blossom is very voluptuous looking and the surfaces are so tactile, it is irresistible to run your fingers over.
Measuring just under 1-3/8" wide by about 1-1/16" tall by just under 1/4 deep, the brooch weighs 5.8 grams. It has a hinged pin stem. The pull out safety mechanism of the trombone clasp has gone missing but without it, the clasp works fine as a simple "C" clasp, only better, with more of the "C" to wrap around and secure the pin.
It is signed on the back "Denmark 107" with "830" in a dotted circle on one side and "G I" in a dotted circle on the other. Taken together, these marks indicate the piece dates from between 1914 and 1930. Apart from the missing piece of the finding, discussed above, it is in Excellent vintage condition with nothing more than expected surface dirt and scratches (mostly on the back).
