Marius Hammer 830S Silver BRACELET Norway Filigree Solje Vintage ca 1880 1930

Marius Hammer 830S Silver BRACELET Norway Filigree Solje Vintage ca 1880 - 1930. On the back, you can see evidence of the careful construction where the separate elements of the tiered bead-capped spirals are bradded to the plaques. With the repetition of forms, the rosettes, bead ing and spiraling wirework, the bracelet is very striking and has a wonderful profile on the arm.

It is signed on the back of the plaque adjacent to the push in clasp "830S" for silver content along with one of Marius Hammer's signatures, the "M" bisected by a hammer. Hammer, who was a goldsmith's son and studied in Hamburg and Berlin, opened his workshop in Bergen in 1871 and after he retired in 1915, it was run by his two sons until 1930. At first Hammer made a large variety of tableware, cutlery and jewelry but by 1880, he was specializing in modern forms of traditional Norwegian jewelry, like this bracelet. Sharing motifs with popular solje jewelry, the silver brooches that are worn in multiples with traditional folk costumes (bunads), this bracelet would look equally great worn with them as it will to work or a night on the town.

Dimensional and textural, the bracelet measures over 1/4" deep (a little more at the clasp) by about 5/8" wide and when closed, has a wearable interior circumference of about 6. Please be sure to check the measurements of your wrist against those of the bracelet to be sure it will fit. It has a wide push in clasp and a safety chain for added security. It weighs 19.8 grams.

Despite its 100 years of age, the bracelet is in Very Good vintage condition with the following minor imperfections: At some point over the years, a few of the brads broke off on the back and a couple of the tiered centers were soldered (with a drop in the tiny hole where the brads were) which does not affect its looks or wearability as it is not visible from the front and all are quite secure. The top surfaces of five beads in a row on the panel with the receiving end of the clasp are flat and a couple beads on the adjacent panel have very minor dings. Some of the spirals are closer together or farther apart than others. There are a few small dents in the back of the panel with the signature (that are not visible from the front).

There is a faint gold cast to the ground of the round silver plaques and the rosettes that ring them, indicating they may have once been lightly gilded (but not the tiered central elements). And there is dirt, surface scratches and tarnish.

Hopefully, you can tell from the photos that the imperfections enumerated are of little consequence (most mentioned only for the sake of completeness) and the bracelet is simply beautiful. Good looking, interesting and wearable, the bracelet is a work of art that would also make a terrific gift, although I doubt you will want to part with it, and will come to you in a gift box, just in case.
