1972 Sterling Tiger Eye PinFINLAND Viking HELM of AWEKultateollisuus Ky Brooch. Amazing how some traditional, historic designs can look so modern and up to date.
From Finland, signed and dated 1972, the heyday of modern Scandinavian design, this striking sterling brooch was inspired by a Viking symbol called "Aegish Jalmur, " translated as "Helm of Terror, " (or Awe) which comes from ancient Viking (or Icelandic) stave-rune magic. The symbol, which may be a variation on a Viking 8-point compass, was often drawn (or impressed) in the forehead and was used to conquer one's fear, give the wearer power and strike fear into his enemies. Not surprisingly, it is popular today as a tattoo. As jewelry, it is a powerful piece, indeed. You can almost imagine the hand of a strong Viking silversmith imbuing his work with all the magic and power he could summon and the piece is very effective.
The tiger's eye (sometimes called cat's eye) is thought to be a powerful stone. It is said to give its wearer the confidence, courage, strength and cunning of a tiger. It is considered to have protective qualities in addition to bringing wealth, good luck and clarity of thought. Using a tiger eye stone in a piece with the symbolic meaning of this one was an inspired combination and the brooch is nothing short of magical. This tiger eye has a satiny sheen and its natural striations and rich earthy. With movement in the play of light (as I have tried to illustrate in the many photos). The brooch measures just under 2 diameter. It is signed on the back with the winged anvil that is the signature of Kultateollisuus Ky, along with the crown in a heart that is the national mark for Finland, followed by "830 H" for the silver content, then the symbol designating the city of Turku and finally, "T7" which signifies the year 1972. This is followed by Made in Finland. I believe (but cannot guarantee) this piece is by Jorma Laine, one of their most highly regarded and avidly sought artists, who designed silver jewelry for them in the 1960s and 70s. This striking and versatile pin is an outstanding example of traditional Nordic design as interpreted by a Finnish master of mid century modernist silver. Managing to appear both primitive and sophisticated at the same time, it is strong and striking, simple and tailored and will look terrific on.
In wonderful condition, it would make a super gift, although I doubt you will want to part with it yourself, and will come to you in a gift box, just in case.
