Anna Greta Eker Sterling Dot Open Top RING Plus Norway Machine AGE 1960s Rare! With a cool and unusual modernist design, this seldom seen vintage Mid-Century Norwegian ring by Anna Greta Eker is dimensional and sculptural. The band is open at the top center, its sides thickening slightly as they slope upward, presenting flat rectangular shapes that do not meet, so a little skin shows through, effectively making use of negative space.
Form follows function, and the size of the ring, also using this opening, could thereby be adjusted (by a jeweler), like a cuff bracelet, if desired. It has an industrial, machine-age look, with slightly raised circles or dots on the sides or shoulders just below the flared opening, and the ground around them is lightly oxidized (deliberately darkened) for color, contrast, interest and emphasis.
The oxidation may look darker / lighter in some of the photos than in person but even in hand, it varies considerably, depending on the angles and lighting. Striking and dramatic, it faces up beautifully and with the strong design has great presence and looks fabulously interesting from all directions. Born in Finland in 1928, where she began as an industrial designer, Anna Greta Eker came to Norway in the 1950s and married Erling Christoffersen, the head of the applied arts center, "Plus, " from its beginning in 1958. This workshop was extremely significant in the history of Norwegian arts and crafts, and Eker, like other greats, including her husband and Tone Vigeland, was one of the leading designers of its silver workshop, called "Norway Silver Designs, " until it ceased jewelry production in the 1970s.This ring is from that brief but important period that was the Mid-Century heyday of Scandinavian design. It is signed on the inside back of the band with the conjoined "ND" for Norway Design along with "+" for the applied arts workshop called "Plus" in Fredrikstad, Norway. It is also signed "Sterling 925 S Norway" and "AGE" in script for Anna Greta Eker. Substantial and well made, the face of the ring is about 1/2" wide, tapering to about 5/16" at the back.
It is currently a size 6-1/4 (but due to the opening on top, is somewhat adjustable, larger more than smaller). The ring is in Very Good vintage condition with dirt, scratches which look. Worse in the enlarged photos than in hand and tarnish as expected signs of wear for its half century of age. With its sculptural, machine age form, it is an exceptional example of the clean lines, cool design and fine workmanship that are the hallmark of the best vintage Scandinavian Silver. A wearable work of art, the ring compares favorably with acclaimed Studio jewelry of its period, world-wide, and belongs equally in collections of twentieth century design, Scandinavian Silver, midcentury modernist art and of course, rings and other jewelry.
