Hans HANSEN Sterling+Enamel Modernist Cufflinks 636Vintage Mid Century Denmark

Hans HANSEN Sterling+Enamel Modernist Cufflinks 636Vintage Mid Century Denmark. With the clean lines and cool design that characterize the best mid-century Scandinavian silver, these fine vintage modernist Danish cuff links by Hans Hansen are works of art - and Norse history. While they look like abstract paintings, the motifs were influenced by Runes, the (magical) letters and ideographs used by ancient Viking cultures (among others). Filtered through the design vocabulary of Hansen's modernist contemporaries, the motifs are timeless and manage to look ancient.

Modern at the same time. In an intriguing study of the juxtaposition of geometric shapes and forms, two angular black enamel lines intersect and stand out strikingly against the silver background of each "canvas" as they will against that of your shirt. Looking at them, it is no wonder the Runic language was thought to be so powerful and the invocation of these motifs will bring their magic and creative force to your cuff.

Interestingly, the width and placement of the lines appears slightly different on the two faces, giving a wonderful sense of the hand of the artist. And turning the cufflinks, so the lines are in different places/directions, really changes the look. The design is very painterly and somehow musical at the same time. Given that Runes would suggest sounds, while I do not know how ones on which these might be based would sound or indeed translate, the complex rhythm of a jazzy song seems apt.

The backs of the links are handsome too with a slightly recessed and oxidized football shape in the center, bifurcated by a raised silver line. These cufflinks are really sharp looking! An important name in Danish silver, Hans Hansen founded his Smithy in the early 1900s and over the years produced work designed not just by him and his son, Karl Gustav Hansen (a major designer in his own right, who designed his highly successful first line, called "Future, " at the age of 18) but also by other prominent designers, including Bent Gabriel Pedersen, Anni and Bent Knudsen and Henning Koppel. Substantial and well made, the oval cufflinks weigh in at 21 grams. They measure about 7/8" by 3/4".

They are signed on one side of both findings with the superimposed double "H" which is an early mark for Hans Hansen, along with "925S Denmark" and on the other side with the number "636" which when viewed in the opposite direction looks like "929". The person from whom I acquired these cufflinks said they belonged to her father who passed away in the 1980s and they are guaranteed to be vintage. The cufflinks are in Very Good / Excellent vintage condition with just surface scratches, dirt and tarnish as expected for their age. They are superb examples of the sophisticated artistry that characterizes the best vintage Danish silver. Eminently wearable, these jazzy links are works of art to wear that will look sensational on your cuff. Belonging equally in collections of Twentieth Century design, Norse / Viking history, modernism, Scandinavian silver and cufflinks, they would make a terrific gift although I doubt you will want to part with them and will come to you in a gift box, just in case. A wonderful pair of mid-century modern Danish sterling cufflinks by Hans Hansen, invoking the power of ancient Viking Runes, to add to your collection of quality and distinction!
