HROAR PRYDZ Norway Sterling Enamel 2 BUTTERFLY PinEUCVintage Norwegian Brooch. With soft but vibrant color and painstaking detail, this vintage sterling and enamel butterfly is simply beautiful. The enameling, with the delicate lines underneath, delineating the intricate patterns in the wings, is very effective and along with the hand painted markings, conveys velvety texture, depth and contrast, capturing the ethereal, translucent quality of real butterfly wings.
The basic color scheme of black, white and reddish orange really "Pops, " making this butterfly extremely eye catching. Very painterly and simply exquisite! The brooch measures just under 2" wide (1-15/16") by about 1-1/8 tall. It is signed on the back "Sterling 925S Norway" with an encircled triangle right after "925S" which is the mark of Hroar Prydz of Oslo. It is in Excellent vintage condition, with no damage of any kind, just light surface scratches, dirt and tarnish due to age. There are the expected minor inconsistencies in execution, mentioned just for the sake of completeness, that only add to its charm and give a sense of "the hand of the artist" note the slight differences in the hand painted black lines and dotted markings. Several mid-century Scandinavian artists excelled in enamel work and butterflies were the ideal subject to show off their skills and artistry. This is a fine specimen for your collection! Managing to be at the same time both tailored and feminine as well as casual and dressy, this versatile pin is striking and wearable in addition to being collectible.
