KUPITTAAN KULTA Sterling Amethyst Spheres Ring Finland Elis Kauppi Vintage 1970s. Don't you just love the purple glow of Amethyst, an ancient stone popular with jewelry artists throughout the ages, including Scandinavians, from the Vikings to the Modernists.
The traditional birthstone for the month of February, it is said to be a "Gem of Fire" and has been revered for its many qualities, including its legendary abilities to both stimulate and soothe, prevent intoxication and provide protection. An exceptional example of Scandinavian Mid Century Modern design, this striking ring from the noted Finnish firm Kupittaan Kulta, has geometric / machinist forms and something of an Atomic Space Age look. It features six amethyst cabochon spheres or beads, set in two rows in a sort of channel setting, or interlocking 3-D grid that surmounts the adjustable silver band. The setting cradles the spheres as shown in some of the photos.
Rounded shapes are cut out of the sides of the setting, smaller than the amethyst spheres, outlining parts of the stones, which rise above them. The repetition and juxtaposition of rounded forms and the luminous, glowing amethyst are quite wonderful and the ring looks fabulous viewed from all directions: head on and in profile, from both the sides and the ends.
The easily adjustable ring is currently about a size 7 and weighs 8.2 grams. The face measures about 11/16" long by 9/16" wide by about 5/16 deep, meaning it will rise that far from the surface of the finger. It faces up beautifully on the hand.
The ring is signed inside the shank as shown in the last photo "925S Finland" preceded by the anvil hallmark that is the mark of Kupittaan Kulta (sometimes spelled Kupittan). A similar ring, with the same marks, but with three rows of a different stone, is pictured on page 249 of. By Christie Romero, where the ring is dated circa 1970.
His successful designs in the 50s led to his becoming known as one of Finland's major designers and his firm as one of the country's major manufacturers of silver jewelry. Dating from the 1970's, the heyday of Scandinavian mid century modern design, this elegant ring is so good looking, it is easy to see why the firm has been so successful! The ring is in Very Good / Excellent vintage condition with just surface scratches, dirt and tarnish from normal wear and expected irregularities in the natural stones, including minor internal inclusions that do not detract from the amethyst's beauty. With the clean lines and cool design that characterize the best Scandinavian silver and a most effective combination of materials, this Finnish sterling and amethyst ring looks great on the hand and will make all your gestures more attractive. Not big and flashy; just elegant, interesting and eye catching, it is versatile and easy to wear. Belonging equally in collections of Scandinavian / Finnish silver, twentieth century modernist design, amethyst and of course, jewelry, it would make a terrific gift, although I doubt you will want to part with it, and will come to you in a gift box, just in case.
