RARE Sterling+Enamel Volmer Bahner FAIRY TALE PinVB Brooch DenmarkH C Andersen. A Work of Art in Sterling and Enamel, this brooch has it all: Great Condition, Fine and Detailed Workmanship, Incredibly Charming Subject and RARE!! Some of the most interesting figurative Scandinavian jewelry was inspired by the wealth of history, lore and fairy tales of those countries. This piece, by Danish silver artist Volmer Bahner, comes from a story by Denmark's beloved Hans Christian Andersen, the Shepherdess and the Chimney-Sweep. The characters were china figurines who were in love. Fearing she would be forced to marry an ugly wooden satyr, they tried to elope. In the end, they retreated to their table top but the danger of marriage to the satyr had passed and they lived happily ever after. The brooch is highly detailed - from the waves in their hair to her gorgeous dress. Though a simple shepherdess, she must have been a fancy figurine as she has a rather regal stance and her gown, which has a plain white collar and a pattern of checks underlying the white enamel elsewhere, even has flowers accenting her skirt. And for that matter, the chimney sweep appears quite poised and dapper himself. The flowers in her skirt are difficult to make out in the photos; but they are perhaps best seen in the third one. Obviously in love, gazing steadfastly at each other, their arms sweetly intertwined, they hold the emblems of their work, she a shepherd's crook and he a ladder. The way his arm winds under one rung of the ladder to grasp another creates a.
Effect that fools the eye into thinking it has actual depth and dimension. The piece is just wonderful.
It measures about 1-5/8" by about 1-1/2" wide. It is in Very Good / Excellent vintage condition. Upon close examination, I note a couple inconsequential manufacturing imperfections: the enamel was applied a little unevenly near the hem of her dress, so the edges of some of the vertical lines in the pattern are not completely covered (which looks much worse in the enlarged photos than in hand, where it is barely noticeable) and there is a minuscule amount of enamel missing at the tip of his extended toe, which again, does not look like damage but appears to be the result of incomplete coverage dating from manufacture. The enameled edges slope smoothly towards the tip of the shoe.
There are no flaws of consequence. It is signed on the back Sterling Denmark V. Which is the signature of Volmer Bahner. Page 95, Bahner is known for his enameled silver jewelry manufactured after WWII.
The jewelry designs are drawn from nature with flowers, plants, fish and animal motifs. Bahner usually marked his jewelry with his initials VB. This mark was first registered in 1962 and active through 1987 so this piece dates from sometime in those 25 years; over 25 - 50 years ago. While one might occasionally find a piece from this rare Fairy Tale series, they certainly are not commonly found.And this Shepherdess and Chimney Sweep brooch is an outstanding example.
