This large brooch is a vintage solje piece that dates from the mid-century. Solje brooches are important in Norwegian culture. The bright glint off the silver discs-called spoons-and the overall circular shape of the brooches were meant to represent the sun. Yet, each solje brooch is distinctive, often passed on from mother to daughter over generations. Solje pieces were used, at one time, to add embellishments to the traditional Norwegian costumes, which are called Bunads. Even today, the Norwegians will wear Bunads for celebrations. The Solje pieces were meant to represent the sun, and were worn on the collars and cuffs of the brunds, normally as brooches or pins.

Solje jewelry was not only worn by women and children. Men also used the pieces, often as buckles for their shoes. In this solje brooch, slightly domed golden discs dangle off the silvery structure, creating a delightfully festive jangling sound and reflecting golden light. The silver structure feels substantial, thickly textured with roping designs. The back of the brooch is engraved'830 S' along with'H' inscribed within a circle.

The 830 S is for the 830 silver standard and the H within the circle is the maker's mark for Ivar T. Most European countries up until 1920s used 830s. Scandinavian countries used 830s silver like Denmark moved to using 925 silver in 1927 however even though a higher grade of silver was used by most jewelers in Scandinavia, they stuck to stamping there jewelry 830s as they did not have to pay a tariff to the assaying office for the change to 925. So most jewelry made by fine houses in Scandinavia will in fact be marked 830s but will have a standard silver of 925.

There are no missing elements. There are no breaks or other damage to the structures.
