Vtg GEORG JENSEN Sterling GRAPES Dangle Pin #217 A Harald Nielsen Denmark Brooch. Scandinavian Design at its Best! Nielsen, who was the brother of Jensen's third wife, began as an apprentice at Jensen at an early age and went on to become artistic director.
He was responsible for some of the company's most successful designs during the 1920s and 30s, much of which is still in production. The lush, sensual bunch of grapes was a favored subject of artists in the Art Nouveau period and this design shows that movement's influence in its naturalistic and organic form. The grapes are probably Nielsen's best known jewelry design and are an iconic and popular example of Jensen jewelry. So much so, the company has created a collection using this design, renamed "Moonlight Grapes". Expertly made, as one would expect from Jensen, the stem of the bunch of grapes was carefully shaped and curved, giving the brooch more dimension and interest and so it hangs beautifully.It measures about 1-3/4" long by about 1-1/8" wide by about 1/4 deep and has a well working safety clasp. It weighs 6.7 grams. It is signed on the back "Sterling Denmark" on one side and on the other, with the design number "217 A" as well as "Georg Jensen" in a dotted circle, the post 1945 signature.
It is in Very Good / Excellent vintage condition with no dings or other issues, just expected light dirt, surface scratches and tarnish. Lush and voluptuous, its sensually curving shape looks great anywhere you pin it and it will go with everything. Plus, the dangle is so alluring with movement. Jewelry like this brooch by Harald Nielsen for Georg Jensen never goes out of style or down in value and belongs equally in collections of Scandinavian Silver, Jensen Jewelry and of course, pins.
